Over a nine-week period, 5th Class had the wonderful opportunity to work with artist Deirdre O’Reilly as part of the Creativity in the Classroom programme.
During the first three weeks, the children explored working with clay. They showed fantastic creativity while sculpting a variety of pieces, including detailed animals, an imaginative jungle scene, and an impressive cityscape.
After the Christmas break, the focus moved to drawing. The pupils studied photographs of birds, carefully observing the different lines and shapes that make up their features. Using these observations, they created their own detailed bird drawings. Once the drawings were complete, the children added vibrant watercolour backgrounds, bringing their artwork to life with colour.
In the final three weeks, the children continued exploring the theme of birds, this time preparing their drawings for printmaking. They carefully developed their designs before transferring them to create prints of their birds. Once the printing was complete, the pupils added watercolour to enhance their work and bring colour to their images.
The finished pieces are truly beautiful and are now proudly framed and displayed on the corridor wall near the art room and the secretary’s office for everyone in the school to enjoy.

The class thoroughly enjoyed their art lessons over the past nine weeks, and we are very grateful to Deirdre for the time and effort she put into creating such wonderful opportunities for the children to explore and express their creativity.
