25-May-20
RSG Senior Infants Ms.Tolan May 25th-29th

I want you to keep counting forwards to and backwards from 20 every day like in class. Sometimes you can clap side to side, sometimes you can stand and sit, or walk forwards and clap your hands and backwards and tap your shoulder. You can even count skips or jumping jacks!

You could get someone to say "1" and then you say "2" and they say "3" and so on up to 20. The grown up or older brother or sister could start at “20” and you say “19” and they say “18” etc back to number 1. Start at different numbers eg 7, 11,14 and count up to 20. Start at different numbers and count back from 20 eg 18, 15,12 0r 8 and stop at 1 or zero.

You can use coins or colouring pencils to practice counting forwards to and backwards from 10. Touch and count slowly and carefully.

Use your numeral cards to mix them up and get a grown up to ask you to find the number 5,9,7,4,8,2,10 etc up to 10. Put the cards in the correct order starting with the smallest and then say the numbers forwards and backwards for practise.

Use coins/pencils or draw circles to make sums on your adding board.Use the number cards to put in the boxes underneath. Write the sum you make eg 5 and 3 makes 8 - then you write down 5 + 3 = 8

Use 10 coins or pencils and your adding board to find all the ways to make 10. Hint: there are 11 ways! Make them on the board and write the sums on a page.

Play Dikki Dikki Dox with someone using 10 coins or pencils. The other person hides some of them and shows you what is left. You have to guess how many are hiding. Then it's your turn to hide some.

Subtraction or Take Away

Get 5 small objects and count them forward and backwards. Remove or take away 1.How many are left?Yes, thats right, 4 are left. We say “5 take away 1 leaves 4”. Try other examples:

5 take away 2, 5 take away 3, 5 take away 4 etc. Each time talk about what you did. Use the sentence “5 take away__leaves__”. Try more examples with numbers smaller than 5

e.g 3 take away 1 etc

The picture below shows a subtraction Board. You could get a grown up or older brother or sister to draw one for you.

  1. Put 5 coins in the first space and put your number 5 card in the square above it.
  2. Take away 1 coin and put it in the second space. Put the number 1 in the square above.
  3. Move whatever is left in the first space to the end space. Put the number 4 in the square above.
  4. Read the sum: 5 take away 1 leaves 4.
  5. Clear the board and try another sum starting with 5.
