Senior Infants Group (Ms Tolan) 18.5.2020 – 22.5.20
Hi all, hope everyone had a good week and that you are trying to do some schoolwork each day. We will work on three new word families for this week.
The word families that I would like you to focus on this week are ud, ag and eg.
Here are some useful tips to teach the word families
- Begin with a key word. In this case I've used the word bag.
- Help your child think of words that rhyme with bag
- It's okay to give clues to help your child begin or to keep them going. Try a guessing game: "I'm thinking of a word that starts with bb and ends with -ag."
- Ask children to think of words that end ag - (bag, rag, stag etc). Check to be sure they understand word meanings. For example, ask, "What does stag mean?".
- It helps to say the sounds (as well as the letter names) clearly as you write each word, one under another.
- If your child suggests a word that isn't part of the word family, keep a separate list handy labelled "Other Good Words" and write them there.
- Once you've created your Word Family Chart, try these extensions.
- Play a phonemic awareness game:
- Say handbag and ask children to repeat it without the hand.
- Say plant and have children repeat it without the /l/.
- Have children write (or dictate) a sentence or a story with some of the -ag words and then illustrate it.
- Ask students to pick two to four words from the list, copy them on paper, and then draw
- Make a flower stem with a round shape on top and print -ag inside the circle
- Cut out petal shapes to be added to the flower. Students take a blank "petal," write an –ag word, and, if possible, illustrate it. Each –ag word gets added around the centre to make a Word Family Flower.
- Also, just to remind you that Twinkl is a really great resource which is free at the moment. There are loads of great resources and information for parents if required.

Also, please try to so some reading each day with your son or daughter, even if it is only for 5 minutes!
You can start on Pink Band A (Cars, Dinosaur Rock etc), one book per day.
Also, another great website is:

where you will find lots of short reading activities to help your child.
Have a great week and you can contact me at norma.hanrahan@warrenmountprimary.com if you have any queries at all.
