Home Learning in Ms Kennedy's Junior Infants
Check out some fun ideas on how to keep busy during school closure in the images attached. The top tips from our Speech and Language Therapist and Occupational Therapist are really helpful and we do them all the time in school!
Activities like making jigsaws, cutting and sticking, drawing, building, colourinig and using lego are all great ways to keep the kids happy and busy during their time at home.
Daily activities and challenges will be posted on our Class Dojo page so make sure to have a look there also!
Sounds/ phonics:
We have learned all of the 42 sounds in school from the Jolly Phonics programme. We are now practicing these sounds. Use the children’s sounds books in their homework folders. Try to practice one sound each day with your child using the CJ Fallon sound like phonics games and videos ( https://slp.cjfallon.ie/ ). The kids can also think of words beginning with the sound, think of names beginning with the sound, look for things in the house beginning with the sound.
Since we know all of the sounds, we are now working on pushing them together to make words (see think link for help https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3ovJIxTQpsU ). We can practice reading short 3 letter words like sat, tap, cat, pat, pin, nip, tan, sit, tip, can, pan, ran.

Tricky words:
There are tips in the pictures above for helping the children to learn their tricky words. They can also use their bingo cards and flashcards in their homework folders and look for their words when they are reading books at home.
Stories:
Reading stories to children is so important and is something that all the children love in school. All children got a book form the school library in their folder last week. Have a look at some of these websites for free online stories:

Maths:
We have learned the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in school and practice counting forwards and backwards to 10 a few times every day. Keep this up at home with your children. Ask them to help sorting items into groups when tidying the house and to count things in the house every day. The can exercise while practicing their numbers also- jump 5 times, run for 10 seconds.
Maths splash is an excellent website that sets fun maths challenges and activities for the kids. Try to play 3 games each day on this with your children.

PE:
In school we use GoNoodle and Cosmic Yoga to keep fit when we are in the classroom. The kids love these websites and they are great for movement breaks throughout the day.

Other useful tips:
It can be a stressful time for parents and you all have busy lives so don’t worry about getting all of the work done. Some of these ideas might be helpful for keeping your child busy and happy. Remember play is really important in Junior Infants and the kids will learn lots from it!
Take care
